Santa Clara Softball Wins Again, Tops Sacred Heart 8-6

Colorado State Classic Tournament Central

FORT COLLINS, Colo. –
Santa Clara University's softball team continued its offensive onslaught at the Colorado State Classic in Fort Collins, beating Sacred Heart 8-6 Saturday morning in the first of two scheduled games for the Broncos, losing to NIU 13-5 in the afternoon.

It marks the second straight win for Santa Clara (2-5) over Sacred Heart in Fort Collins. Not only did SCU defeat Sacred Heart 7-6 yesterday, but the Broncos put up 13 runs on host Colorado State before darkness forced the conclusion of Friday's late game to be pushed back until Sunday.

SCU leads that game against CSU 13-10 after six complete innings.

"Our hitters have been aggressive, we've taken a different approach at the plate," said Santa Clara head coach Lisa Mize. "They are battling in every at-bat. We actually hit four homers in that Colorado State game."

Saturday morning against Sacred Heart, the Broncos scored three times in the fifth to take a 7-5 lead. Kristin Welsh and Stephanie Fisher each had two hits. Senior pitcher Jenna Fong worked 4-plus innings in relief of Kelly Scribner to pick up her second win and improve to 2-1.

In Santa Clara's second game of the day, the Broncos scored four times in the first inning but lost to Northern Illinois 13-5 in five innings. Briana Knight went 3 for 3 against NIU and homered.
