Iowa State Tops Santa Clara in Softball Saturday, 6-2

MORAGA, Calif. – Kelly Scribner and Breezy Bernard (pictured) hit RBI-doubles for Santa Clara, part of a two-run fourth inning, which put the Broncos in front, but it was Big 12 Conference member Iowa State rallying for a 6-2 victory Saturday.

Santa Clara (4-21; 0-0 PCSC) had its Friday and Sunday games canceled at the 2012 Gael Classic in Moraga, leaving the Broncos with just one game on the weekend – and that was Saturday's setback to Iowa State (8-15; 0-0 Big 12).

The SCU defense played error-free softball behind starter Carissa Theis (2-6). Following Scribner and Bernard's run-producing at-bats in the fourth, Santa Clara led 2-1.

However, in the bottom of the fourth inning Madison Jones hit a two-run homer to leftfield off Theis, a swing that gave the lead and the momentum back to ISU. Theis allowed just five hits before Jessica Turner came on after Jones had put ISU up 3-2.

The Cyclones tacked on three runs in the sixth to give their starting pitcher Taylor Smith (1-0) much-needed insurance after SCU had threatened by putting two runners on base in the top half of the inning.

Jenna Krummen hit a pinch-hit double in the seventh and Stephanie Fisher added two hits for an SCU team that will play four games at UC Riverside's tournament next weekend, March 23 through 25.
