Carissa Theis Hurls Two-Hit Shutout and Santa Clara Homers Six Times in DH at Pacific

STOCKTON, Calif. - San Jose native and Leigh High School product Carissa Theis pitched a two-hit shutout to lead Santa Clara University's softball team to a 4-0 victory over the University of the Pacific Wednesday night. The Broncos nearly notched a sweep of the doubleheader, however the homestanding Tigers were able to rally for a 6-5 win in the opener.

"(Carissa) was dailed in, she was hitting her spots and Breezy (Bernard) called a great game," said Santa Clara head coach Lisa Mize. "Being a transfer, coming in from a good program, she knows how to face tough competition. She is a seasoned pitcher who was really successful here in high school."

Not only did Theis limit the reigning Big West Champion Tigers (25-14) to just two hits and six baserunners, the Broncos (8-32) offense erupted for six homeruns in the two-game set. Stephanie Fisher homered in both games while Alyssa Jepsen, Jamie Wallis, Kelly Scribner and Jordan Newell each went deep.

The offensive production was a welcome sight for a Bronco team that scored just nine runs and batted .173 in its four-game set with Sacramento State last weekend. In fact Jepsen and Wallis went back-to-back to lead off Game One.

"It was nice to see our offense get back on track a little bit," said Mize. "The bottom of the order came through for us in a big way as well. Collectively we stuck with our plan, and stayed consistent."

Newell, Fisher and Jepsen each had two hits in the opener and six different Broncos registered hits in Game Two.

"It's huge for us, playing well against a good Pacific team, this is a huge boost for us heading into the weekend at San Diego," added Mize, looking ahead to the conference matchup with league-leading Toreros Saturday and Sunday.
