SAN DIEGO – Santa Clara women's tennis opened West Coast Conference play with a 4-2 win over San Diego on Friday. Madison Clarke and Maddie Pothoff each picked up two wins and Zeina El Tawil clinched the match.
Paired together at No. 1 doubles, Clarke and Pothoff got the Broncos off to a winning start with a 6-2 win over Nicole Anderson and Daniel Morales. Shortly after, the Broncos No. 2 doubles team comprised of freshmen Elvena Gevargiz and Katya Tabachnik toppled Sophia Chow and Maria-Paula Torres to clinch the doubles point for Santa Clara.
Pothoff playing at No. 2 and Clarke at No. 1, won the second and third points for the Broncos (3-5, 1-0 WCC), each winning in straight sets.
Pothoff defeated Morales 6-2, 6-2 and Clarke took care of Anderson 6-2, 6-3.
San Diego (3-5, 0-1 WCC) picked up two points on courts six and five sandwiching Pothoff and Clarke's wins, to close the match to 3-2.
However, senior Zeina El Tawil closed things out for the Broncos taking care of Kati Kukaras 6-2, 6-3 on court three to clinch the match for Santa Clara.
Santa Clara next plays Mountain West conference's Nevada on Friday. First serve is at 11 a.m. PT.
