Volleyball Wins At Portland In Four

The Bronco volleyball team got back in the winning column on Saturday by beating winless Portland 3-1.  Set scores were 25-13, 25-18, 26-28 and 25-17.  Santa Clara is 8-13 and 3-9 in the WCC.  Portland is 0-22 and 0-13.  It is Santa Clara's first win since its 3-1 vs. Portland on Oct. 3.  The Broncos return home to host No. 8 San Diego on Thurs., Nov. 7 at 6 pm and then No. 21 BYU on Sat., Nov. 9 at 1 pm.

Santa Clara hit .359 with 60 kills (13 e, 131 att.).  The Broncos collected 39 digs, 54 assists, eight team blocks, eight service aces and nine service errors.  Portland hit .185 with 47 kills (25 e, 119 att.).  The Pilots collected 55 digs, 46 assists, six team blocks, five service aces and four service errors.

Individually, the Broncos had four Broncos score double digit kills.  Haley Cameron had 13 kills, hitting .435.  Megan Anders, Nikki Hess and Sabrina Clayton all scored 12 kills each with Anders hitting .524.  Alyssa Anderson had 47 assists and three kills.  Taylor Milton had eight kills, three aces and 13 digs.  Mary Shepherd had nine digs and an ace. 

Portland was led by Megan Wedan's 16 kills and 12 digs.  

The Broncos started the match on a 12-1 run.  The Broncos continued to roll, taking a 16-4 lead and then a 17-7 lead.  Portland scored three of the next five points, but the Broncos were too much and won the first set 25-13.   SCU scored four straight points to close out the first set.

Tied twice in the second set, the Broncos rolled off four of the next five points to go up 6-3 on a Portland error.  A kill by Brittney Markwith brought the Pilots within one, 8-7 SCU.  The Broncos scored four of the next five before the Pilots called for time, down 12-8.  Portland continued to battled and again got close, trailing by one, 16-15.  The Broncos scored four straight to move ahead 20-15.  Anders kill put SCU up 22-17.  A couple kills by Clayton gave the Broncos set point.  Monica Jordan halted the win with a kill, but Anderson dumped the ball for a 25-18 set two win for the Broncos. 

The Broncos ran out to a 7-3 lead and then went up 8-4 on a kill by Anders.  Haley Cameron's kill pushed the Bronco lead to 14-7.   SCU went up 20-13 on an ace by Mary Shepherd.   Portland didn't throw in the towel and battled hard to tie it up 22-22 and 23-23.  The Pilots took a 24-23 lead on an error by Milton, but Markwith's error tied it up 24-24.  And ace by Milton gave the Broncos set point.  Timeout Portland. Hess was called for a ball handling error to tie it up 25-25.  Wedan's kill put SCU up 26-25.  A kill by Hess tied it up 26-26 to give SCU the ball.  Kate Sullivan's kill gave Portland set point.  And another kill by Wedan gave Portland the third set 28-26.

In the fourth set Portland took a 4-2 lead.  The teams tied it up at 6, 7, 8 and 9.  A kill by Liger put Portland up 10-9.  SCU scored four straight on a kill by Milton and three  Portland errors.  Portland called for time, down 13-10.  The Broncos scored three more out of the timeout, including an ace by Clayton and a kill by Hess.  The teams traded sideouts three times as the score moved ahead 18-13 Broncos.  A kill by Hess and another by Clayton made it 20-13.  The Broncos took a 22-16 lead on a kill by Clayton.  SCU scored three of the next four to win the fourth set 25-17.
