Santa Clara, Calif. - The Santa Clara women's water polo team dominated its last opponent, Cal State Monterey Bay, last weekend and they have hopes of beating another Cal State squad, this time Cal State East Bay, on Saturday. Game time is set for noon and the match will be played at the Leavey Center Pool.
Santa Clara overcame a 10-6 defeat by San Jose State last Saturday to take down Cal State Monterey Bay 17-7 the following day. Ten different Bronco players scored at least one goal, led by Christie Miller's four goals. In addition, Kristin Barnes played solid defense in the cage, notching four blocks in the rout. Santa Clara's record now stands at 1-1 in 2006. Head coach Keith Wilbur hopes that his team will be able to maintain their focus and concentration for their home opener, as he expects nothing but a solid effort from the Pioneers.
"Cal State East Bay is a good team that is well coached. It is early in the season, and it will be the first time we will see them this year, so we are not sure exactly what to expect," said Wilbur about this weekend's match-up. "Our approach will be to come out and play our game, but we will be ready to make adjustments during the game if needed."
Added Wilbur: "It is also our first home game, so we are hoping to play well in front of a good home crowd."
