Santa Cruz, Calif. - The Santa Clara women's water polo team remained undefeated at the UC Santa Cruz Slugfest Tournament, taking down Colorado State 10-6 and Sonoma State 14-5 on Sunday to go 4-0 during the two-day event. In the morning match against the Rams, Kristin Barnes led the way on defense with six blocks, while Christie Miller was the top scorer in a balanced attack over the Sea Wolves in the afternoon.
"In both games, I think we came out strong and played good defense. We did a better job finishing up our games, which was nice to see from the team," said head coach Keith Wilbur.
In the 10-6 triumph over Colorado State, Alanna Simpkins found the back of the net three times to pace Santa Clara, while Claire Linney added two goals of her own. In addition, Bryn Asher, Lindsey Bacolini, Kendra Betke, Kendal Hildebrand, and Katie Radvanyi each chipped in a goal. Emily Bonk had an excellent all-around game, posting two steals to go along with an assist. Barnes manned the cage with six blocks to keep the Rams at bay.
Later in the afternoon, Santa Clara dismantled Sonoma State 14-5, with eight different players finding the back of the net. Andrea Evans and Christie Miller had three goals apiece to pave the way for the Broncos and Bacolini and Bonk chipped in two goals each as well. Brianna Anderson, Hildebrand, Linney, and Radvanyi each scored once to account for the final margin. Bonk also added an assist and a steal, while Radvanyi had two steals and an assist in the dominating win. On defense, Barnes and Randahl Capurro split time at the goalie position, as they both combined for 11 blocks in the match.
Santa Clara improves to 8-4 on the year and returns to action next Saturday during the Alumni Game. Match time is set for noon at the Leavey Center Pool.
