La Jolla, Calif. - The Santa Clara women's water polo finished the weekend with a 12th-place showing at the tough Triton Tournament, held on the campus of UC San Diego in La Jolla, Calif. With 11 of the Top 20 teams in the country converging at the Canyonview Aquatic Center the past two days, No. 20 Santa Clara faced stiff challenges in every match and today, it beat Pomona-Pitzer 6-2 before dropping the next two matches to No. 19 Cal State Northridge and No. 13 Hartwick College.
"The morning game was good to get a win but we had trouble scoring with our counterattack. Losing to Hartwick and Northridge... it was just a tough tournament to play five games in two days against quality competition," said head coach Keith Wilbur. "It was a good learning experience for our team and we're better for it."
In Santa Clara's 6-2 victory over Pomona-Pitzer, six different players landed in the scoring column, as Lindseey Bacolini, Emily Bonk, Andrea Evans, Claire Linney, Katie Radvanyi, and Alanna Simpkins found the back of the net once. In addition, Bacolini drew two kickouts in the match. On defense, the Broncos were led by goalies Kristin Barnes and Randahl Capurro, as both tallied two blocks each and split time in the cage.
In the mid-morning match against Cal State Northridge, Andrea Evans scored twice to lead Santa Clara, but it was not enough as the Broncos fell 8-5 to the Matadors. Along with Evans, Kendra Betke, Christie Miller, and Radvanyi each scored a goal. Bacolini tallied two steals on the defensive end, while Bonk drew two kickouts. Once again, Barnes and Capurro split time in the cage, notching three and two blocks, respectively.
Brianna Anderson found the back of the net twice and Evans and Miller each scored once, but Hartwick was able to hold off Santa Clara in the end, escaping with a 6-4 win. Bacolini was solid on defense, totaling two steals, while Barnes and Capurro combined for fibe blocks in the cage.
Santa Clara evens its record at 4-4 on the year, and returns to action next weekend in Santa Cruz, Calif. for the Slugfest Tournament.
