SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Having already faced seven nationally ranked opponents through 11 games since January 26, the Santa Clara University women's water polo team preps for just one game this weekend – a Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) matchup with Cal State East Bay in Hayward on Sunday, Feb. 17 at 12 noon.

Santa Clara (3-8; 1-2 WWPA) has played away from home in all but one contest this season. Despite the demands of playing 11 of their first 12 on the road, and doing so against some of the nation's best teams, the Broncos have faired much better than their overall record may indicate.

Redshirt freshman Julia Peters (San Jose, Calif. / Presentation HS) scored four goals and drew three penalty shots in a 14-12 loss to then-No. 8 LMU back on January 26, a game that was tied in the final moments. Senior goalkeeper Stephanie Clements (San Carlos, Calif. / Sacred Heart Prep), pictured, had a season-high 10 saves against then-No. 18 UC San Diego in that season-opening tournament down in Santa Barbara as well.

LMU, UCSD, Santa Clara and Cal State East Bay (2-6; 1-1 WWPA) are picked 1, 2, 3 and 5 respectively in the 2013 WWPA Preseason Coaches Poll.

"We have had a good rivalry with East Bay over the past few years," says Santa Clara head water polo coach Keith Wilbur. "They have a really good team, finishing third in our conference last year. They also have one of the top players in our conference, Claire Pierce, a senior first-team all-conference player. It's also a tough environment to play in because it's a different size pool, something we'll have to adjust to Sunday."

The Broncos are playing well in front of the cage, with hole-sets Peters, Kaitlin Murphy (Carlsbad, Calif. / Carlsbad) and Elizabeth Anderson (Palo Alto, Calif. / Gunn) combining to draw 59 kick outs. Defensively, Jamie Swartz San Diego, Calif. / Scripps Ranch) leads all SCU players with 15 steals.

Junior Claire Eadington (Corona Del Mar / Corona Del Mar) is the only Bronco in double-figures this season in each of the following statistical categories: goals (15), assists (13) and steals (12). Despite being a freshman, Peters leads all SCU players in goals (16) and kick outs drawn (25).
