Broncos Drop Two Games in Day 1 of The Bronco Tournament

Santa Clara, Calif. – Santa Clara dropped two games on the first day of The Bronco Tournament, hosted at the Sullivan Aquatic Center. In the first game of the day, LMU got the best of Santa Clara, 8-2. The Broncos lost on a last second goal from Cal State East Bay, falling 9-8 in the afternoon.

Other scores from the day were: Cal State East Bay beat Sonoma State 10-8, UCSD downed Coloradro State 11-5, LMU defeated Cal State Monterey Bay 12-3, Cal State East Bay beat SCU 9-8, UCSD won over Sonoma State 14-5 and Colorado State beat Monterey Bay 10-9.

Action resumes tomorrow, April 7 at 8 a.m. with Santa Clara taking on Colorado State.

The Broncos were hot out of the gate against LMU, with Kaitlin Murphy and Claire Eadington notching a goal apiece in the first period. LMU held Santa Clara scoreless for the rest of the game, piling on three goals in the second, two goals in the third and three goals from Alexandra Honny in the fourth period.

In goal for the Broncos, Stephanie Clements recorded six saves. Claire Wright notched four saves for the Lions. 

In game two for the Broncos, Santa Clara had four goals from Julia Peters and two goals Elle Surber with Jenny Anderson and Jamie Swartz chipping in with one apeice. 

Cal State East Bay stayed close with the Broncos throughout the game, but scored four goals in fourth period, including two in the last 1:30 to tie the game and then pull out the last-second win. Sara Hudyn scored a game-high six goals, and the Pioneers had one goal from Kate McAfee, Jennifer Lightbody and Allison Zell. 

Marrina Nation recorded 13 saves for the Pioneers and Clements notched 12 for the Broncos.
