Women’s Water Polo Edges Sonoma State to Sweep Saturday’s Action at Home

SANTA CLARA, Calif.Cathy Cantoni scored the go-ahead goal with less than two minutes remaining to help Santa Clara women's water polo overcome a late deficit and defeat Sonoma State, 8-7, Saturday evening.

Annie Eldredge tied the game at 7-all on the power play with 3:00 left and then set up Cantoni's even-strength goal with 1:23 on the clock.

Francesca Puccinelli made a career-high 16 saves, including two keys ones on the last possession by the Seawolves (2-5), helping the Broncos secure their second win of the day.

Eldredge matched her career high with three goals, including the game-winner, to lead Santa Clara (3-1) to a 6-4 victory over Cal State East Bay in Saturday morning action.

Cantoni (two) was the only Bronco with multiple goals against the Seawolves who were led by Carleigh Robinson, who scored a game-high five times.

The Broncos were efficient at the offensive end, scoring on eight of their 22 shot attempts. They also were 4-for-8 with the man advantage.

Santa Clara heads into Golden Coast Conference action Friday when it plays at San Diego State. The team will remain in San Diego the following two days to compete in the Triton Invitational.
