Bronco Cross Country/Track Welcome Pete Cushman As An Assistant Coach

Bronco head coach Felipe Montoro is proud to announce Thursday that former West Coast Conference runner Pete Cushman has joined the Bronco men's and women's cross country and track teams coaching staff.  It is his second stint with the Broncos as he was a volunteer coach at Santa Clara from 2004-06.

"I am very pleased that we are able to add Pete to our staff. His familiarity with the West Coast Conference, his extensive experience as a coach and detailed knowledge of the sport are going to make us better, no doubt," said Montoro.

Cushman, a Boise, Idaho native has spent the last six years working as an assistant track and field and cross country coach for San Francisco State. Prior to his time at SFSU, Cushman was a volunteer assistant at Santa Clara from 2004-06.

"I met Felipe eight years ago as a volunteer at Santa Clara, and we've been good friends since," said Cushman. "For the last six years we've remained in touch. We would usually catch up at meets or over the phone and check in on how our program's were both developing. Eight years ago, it felt like the Broncos were just starting something new, and I've been fortunate enough to see that grow over time, and see the team culture develop into the right place. I'm excited to step back in at the right time and continue to help this program evolve. The student-athletes have some great enthusiasm, and Felipe and I work well together, and I think we can help keep the ball rolling in a positive direction working together.

While at SFSU Cushman assisted in coaching the school's second-ever Division II All-American, as well as helping both the men's and women's teams achieve their highest finishes in school history at the conference and regional levels in 2011. Cushman is also a coach for the Impala women's running club in San Francisco. The Impalas had six women qualify for the US Olympic trials in the marathon in 2008 while 14 qualified in 2012.

Cushman attended Gonzaga University from 2000-04 and competed in cross country and track while an undergrad. He was the team captain from 2002-04. He earned his MA in Health, Physical Education and Recreation from Saint Mary's in 2006.

"I feel a special tie to the West Coast Conference, and am excited about my future at Santa Clara," added Cushman. "It's an outstanding school, bright and talented student-athletes, and a supportive and engaged athletic administration. Santa Clara is the small, family-oriented institution and I look forward to being a part of again."
