Twenty-four Broncos have been honored for their academics by the West Coast Conference on Friday, the eve of the West Coast Conference Championship in Portland. Four Broncos were named to the 2012 First Team West Coast Conference Cross Country All-Academic team on Friday. In addition, 13 Bronco women and seven Bronco women made the All-Academic Honorable Mention list.
Kevin Oliver was named to the WCC All-Academic First Team for the third straight year and Ben Demaree was named to the WCC All-Academic First Team for the second year. Emily Robinson and Allie Sibole were named to the First Team for the first time this season.
On the men's side, the following were named to the All-Academic Honorable Mention list: Tony Ferrari, Andrew Gaddis, Marcos Hinojosa, Matt Mosier, Sean Roe, Luca Signore and Peter Stephens.
On the women's side, the following were named to the All-Academic Honorable Mention list: Jamie Anderson, Alex Garcia, Kayla Germany, Lauren Germany, Erin Hartwig, Audrey Hiatt, Mary Kriege, Amia Nash, Hayley Ney, Hannah Peterson, Mary Reynolds, Lauren Spears and Meg Webber.
At the conclusion of each athletic season, the WCC selects an all-academic squad for each WCC-sponsored sport. To be considered in the sport of men's cross country, a student-athlete must maintain at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average, be a significant contributor to his team and participate in at least 50 percent of all contests, and have at least sophomore athletic and academic standing with at least one year in residence at the nominating institution.
Santa Clara's first-team members carry impressive majors and grade point averages (GPA). Demaree has a 3.88 GPA as a junior in Bioengineering. Oliver carries a 3.97 as a double major in Economics and Political Science. Robinson, a sophomore, has a 3.99 GPA in Biochemistry. Sibole has a 3.98 GPA as a junior in Bioengineering.
"It's always a priority to ensure that we are taking advantage of the educations opportunities that Santa Clara offers," said Bronco head coach Felipe Montoro. "I am really proud of the balance in their lives, academically and athletically. I look forward to them continued success in the classroom."
Montoro also raved about the WCC as a whole academically. "When I look at this list of First Team members, I am really proud to be a part of a conference that takes academics so serious. It's evident that these are true student-athletes," added Montoro.
