The Bronco cross country teams continued their preseason competitions on Saturday at the Hornet Jamboree, hosted by Sac State. Sophomore Mary Kriege led the way for the women, running 17:58 for the 5k course, to finish eighth overall. Junior Luca Signore led the men for the first time in his career, running 20:15 for the 4-mile course.  Next weekend Santa Clara runs at the WCC Preview Meet in Portland and the Gator Invitational in San Francisco.

The women were fifth overall, four points behind UC Davis (89 to 93). The men reversed those results placing fourth, four points ahead of UC Davis (123 to 127). The Cal women won the race with 41 points and host Sac State dominated the men's race with 23 points.

"I was really pleased with how we competed. The race came at the end of a very challenging week of training and we have only just started our build up towards the post season. For a number of athletes to run personal bests despite our heavy training load is very encouraging," said Bronco head coach Felipe Montoro. "I was really impressed with Mary's race and thought Lauren had a big breakthrough on the course. Luca probably had the best executed race plan of his XC career and Sean Roe also looked the better than he had before also. Pete and I are really looking forward to racing everyone who is healthy at the SF State Invite and the WCC Preview meet next week."

Behind Kriege, junior Lauren Germany was 15th overall in 18:27. Sophomore Allie Sibole was 18th in 18:30 and junior Kayla Germany ran 18:58 for 26th. Sophomore Kelly Ryan and RS-freshman Hannah Peterson were 28th (19:10) and 41st, (21:22) respectively.

After Signore, sophomore Sean Roe was 22nd in 20:51, and freshman David Leavy debuted at 21:14 for 27th. Junior Moises Venegas ran a 21:16 to finish in 29th and Ezana Tesfu rounded out the scoring in 33rd at 21:21. Freshman Adrian Hinojosa was 38th (21:27), senior Matt Mosier was 36th (21:56) and freshman Leland Wong (22:01) also ran well for the Broncos.
