STOCKTON, Calif. - The Santa Clara University men's golf team began its 2003-04 season on Monday with the first two rounds of the Pacific Invitational at the Reserve at Spanos Park in Stockton, Calif. The Broncos fired team rounds of 298 and 287 for a first day total of 9-over par, 585.

With the score, SCU currently sits in ninth place out of 12 teams. Georgia Southern leads the tournament with its team score of 11-under par, 565. San Francisco, the only other West Coast Conference team in the event, is in eighth place, just one shot ahead of the Broncos.

Individually for Santa Clara, freshman Jong Yoon fired rounds of 74 and 69 in his first collegiate tournament and sits in a tie for 15th-place at 1-under par. Junior Matt Klenz is just two shots back of Yong after rounds of 72 and 73.

Sophomore Blake Lugar is 4-over and tied for 38th after the first two rounds, while junior Jonathan Edwards is tied for 54th at 7-over par and senior Justin Ahasic is in 60th place at 9-over.

Vinnie Poncino of UC Irvine leads the tournament after rounds of 67 and 68, and is currently 9-under par entering Tuesday's final round. A three-way tie for second place bunches up the leaderboard with Aron Price and Toshi Hirata of Georgia Southern and Torey Edwards of Long Beach State all at 7-under par.

The Broncos conclude play in the tounament with one round Tuesday morning at the par-72, Reserve at Spanos Park. Following the season-opening tournament, Santa Clara will take part in the CHL Intercollegiate hosted by Cal State Northridge. The three-round tournament will take place on October 20 and 21.
