Men's Golf Leads After First Day of SCU Invitational

SAN JOSE, Calif. - The Santa Clara University men's golf team holds a seven shot advantage at the SCU Invitational after firing rounds of 303 and 296 at the par 72, Silver Creek Valley Country Club in San Jose, Calif.

"I am pleased with the way our guys played today," said head coach John Kennaday. "We know there is a lot of golf still left to play though, so tomorrow will be another good test for us."

Justin Ahasic and Jong Yoon each carded rounds of 74 and 72 for the Broncos and are in a tie for second place, one stroke behind individual Chris Heintz of UCLA who shot rounds of 73 and 72 for a 1-over par score of 145.

Santa Clara's seven stroke lead is over West Coast Conference rival San Francisco whose two round total of 606 is two shots better than Sacramento State. Saint Mary's is currently in fourth place with its 37-over par total of 613, two shots ahead of fifth place Cal Poly.

Blake Lugar is tied for 18th place after his rounds of 78 and 75 helped the Broncos to the lead after day one. Michael Nicoletti is tied for 23rd with his two round total of 10-over par, 154, while Matt Klenz rounded out the Santa Clara scores with his day one total of 159, placing him in a tie for 40th.

Individual Justin Madison of San Jose State is in a tie for fourth place with his 3-over par score of 147 alongside Robert Frye of San Francisco. Bryan O'Malley sits alone in sixth place after rounds of 73 and 75 gave him a 4-over par total of 148.

Tuesday's third and final round begins at 7 a.m. at the 6,926-yard private course.
