SIMI VALLEY, Calif. - The Santa Clara University men's golf team concluded play in its second fall tournament of the season, finishing in a tie for 18th out of 21 teams at the Bill Cullum Countrywide Invitational hosted by Cal State Northridge. The invitational was being contested at the 6,707 yard, par-72, Wood Ranch Golf Club in Simi Valley, Calif.
"I think our aggressiveness worked against us to some extent," said head coach John Kennaday. "We didn't respect the golf course enough this week and it hurt us."
SCU's final round team score of 305 pushed their two day team total to 915, which tied Sacramento State and was one stroke ahead of Gonzaga and two better than Loyola Marymount, the only other West Coast Conference members in the tournament.
Blake Lugar finished just outside the top-25 with his three round total of 5-over par, 221, following a final round 76 Tuesday morning. Matt Klenz's 74 was a team-low on Tuesday and pushed his tournament total to 16-over par, 232, the same total as teammated Michael Nicoletti who carded a final round 75.
Jonathan Edwards and Justin Ahasic each fired rounds of 8-over par, 80, Tuesday morning pushing Edwards' total for the tournament to 235 while Ahasic posted a 236.
After posting consecutive team scores of 286 on day one, CSUS secured victory with a round three score of 287 for a final score of 859, eight strokes ahead of runner-up Utah.
Long Beach State shot an impressive 288 in the third round to finish in third place while New Mexico State and Cal Poly rounded out the top five.
Billy Moon of Cal State Stanislaus took the top individual honors with a three-round score of 209. Moon shot rounds of 71, 69 and 68 to take first place by three strokes. Garrett Glegg of Utah was second with a card of 212. Barry Schenk of Weber State and Ryan Thornberry of CSUS tied for third place with scores of 213.
Santa Clara returns to action next weekend as they host the annual SCU Invitational at the Silver Creek Valley Country Club in San Jose. The Broncos finished in a tie for first last year with Saint Mary's but lost in a playoff. Ahasic was the top finisher for SCU last year as his even-par total of 216 was good enough for second place.
