SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Five different players scored goals, including three freshmen, as the Santa Clara men's soccer team exploded to a 5-0 win over Cal Berkeley in the final game of the Santa Clara adidas Classic Saturday night at Buck Shaw Stadium. In the first game, San Francisco won the event's title with a 1-0 win over Missouri-Kansas City.
The Broncos (5-2-0) took a 1-0 lead early in the game when sophomore Scott McLain (Irvine, Calif.) headed-in a goal off an Anthony Chimienti (San Jose, Calif.) assist at the 4:35 mark of the first half. The two teams played to a scoreless tie for the next 60:00 until freshman Phillip Johnson (Bellevue, Wash.) took advantage of a rebound off a Chimienti header to record his first goal of the season just 5:50 into the second half.
Cal dropped to 2-5-0 with the loss. The win was the fourth shutout in the last six games for Santa Clara. In addition, the five goals scored were the most for a Bronco squad since a 6-0 victory over the College of Notre Dame in the 1999 season-opener.
"This was a hard-fought game early on," said Santa Clara head coach Mitch Murray. "We battled through it and got a breakaway which opened it up a little bit. We worked hard and took that into halftime. It was such a hard-paced game. I thought they tired a bit and they weren't able to stay at the same pace they were at when the game started. Today we put away our chances at scoring. As teams tire you hope you can settle in and create chances. That is what happened in the second half. We got up a couple goals and they had to press. That is what opened it up for our offense."
Chimienti scored his second goal in as many games with an acrobatic move between two defenders and the goalkeeper into an empty net off a Steve Millward (Durango, Colo.) assist. Last year's leading scorer for SCU, Chimienti also had two assists in the game. Freshmen Matt Upton (Long Beach, Calif.) and Audren Cashman (Palo Alto, Calif.) added late goals for the Broncos.
"Anthony is such a gifted player and we know that," said Murray, who is in his 10th season as the head coach of the Broncos. "He has been trying to lead the team and he has been creating great chances all year. Getting the goal on Thursday against UMKC really took a lot of weight off his shoulders. He is much more relaxed. He really came alive in the second half. His goal really showed a lot of creativity and ability. It really showed what he is capable of."
