PORTLAND, Ore. - Santa Clara evened its record to 1-1 in the West Coast Conference Sunday with a 2-0 win at No. 2-ranked Portland.
The two teams battled to a scoreless tie for the first 79:00 of the match before the Broncos scored two goals in the final 11 minutes of the contest. Santa Clara improved to 6-6 on the season and 1-1 in the WCC. Portland fell to 8-2-2 overall, and 0-1-0 in WCC play. Portland was ranked second in the nation in the latest NCAA Men's Soccer Media Poll.
After Portland keeper Curtis Spiteri stopped Anthony Chimienti's (San Jose, Calif.) initial shot at 79:40, Chimienti chased down the rebound and knocked it in for the game-winner. Ten minutes later, Keith Burden (Niwot, Colo.) leaped over two Portland defenders at the top of the box at 89:43 to score SCU's second goal.
Santa Clara keeper Rusty Johnson (O'Fallon, Ill.) recorded four saves in the game and the Bronco defense helped seal the squad's fifth shutout of the season.
Santa Clara extended its unbeaten streak against the Pilots to five-straight matches.
Portland held a 10-2 edge in corner kicks, and outshot SCU by an 11-8 margin. However, SCU held a 7-4 edge in shots in the second half. The shutout was the first of the year for Portland and the first home shutout since a 1-0 loss against Saint Mary's last season, a stretch of nine games.
Santa Clara's next scheduled match is Thursday, Oct. 19 against the College of Notre Dame. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Buck Shaw Stadium.
