Men's Soccer Records Third Shutout of 2000 In Win Over Washington

Sept. 16, 2000

SEATTLE, Wash. -

The Santa Clara men's soccer team improved to 4-1 on the season with a 2-0 shutout of the University of Washington in the Nike Northwest Soccer Challenge, hosted by UW.

Senior Michael Goehring (Fresno, Calif.) scored his first goal of the season on a powerful 35-yard goal kick over Huskie goalkeeper Chad Olsen. Goehring's goal, which came at the 19:22 mark of the first half, proved to be the game-winner for the Broncos.

Junior transfer Jamil Walker (Pittsford, N.Y.) recorded his fourth goal of the season with a low line drive into the right side of the goal at the 26:08 mark in the first half. Senior Brett Davis (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) was credited with the assist on Walker's goal.

With the loss, Washington fell to 3-3 on the season.

Despite two offensive goals in the match, the Bronco defense was the difference for Santa Clara. Junior goalkeeper Rusty Johnson (O'Fallon, Ill.) recorded four saves in the game and was aided by a back line that prevented Washington from scoring despite 16 corner kicks by the Huskies.

"We played very disciplined on the defensive end of the field," said assistant coach Cameron Rast. "This was really our first real test of the year. Washington is tough to beat on their home field and they have a tournament-tested program. Our back line played really well today and took a lot of pressure off Rusty Johnson."

Washington, who has advanced to NCAA postseason tournament play in each of the last five seasons, outshot the Broncos by a 10-8 margin, including a 7-2 margin in the second half.

Santa Clara next faces Missouri-Kansas City in a single game of the Santa Clara adidas Classic on Thursday at 7:30 p.m..
