Men's Soccer Defeats Alabama A&M

Sept. 9, 2000

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -

Sophomore transfer Jamil Walker (Rochester, N.Y.) scored the game-winning goal 14 minutes into the second half to break a scoreless tie and lead the Santa Clara men's soccer team to a 1-0 shutout of previously-undefeated Alabama A&M in the first match of the San Francisco diadora Classic.

The Broncos (1-1) outshot A&M by a 15-5 margin, including a 9-1 edge in the first period. Junior Rusty Johnson (O'Fallon Ill.) recorded the shutout for Santa Clara in his first action this season. Johnson did not play in the season-opener against Sacramento State due to a deep thigh bruise.

Alabama A&M fell to 3-1 on the season. They had outscored their opponents by an 11-1 margin heading into the Santa Clara contest.

"I thought we played pretty well in the first half," said head coach Mitch Murray. "We really had a lot of chances to score and we just didn't take advantage of them. For the first 25-to-30 minutes we really put a lot of pressure on them and we deserved to be up by a couple of goals. It is still early in the season and we just aren't sharp yet."

Following a flurry in front of the goal, Kirk Fonseca (Bakersfield, Calif.) fed Walker an assist for the game winner at the 59:56 mark in the game. Walker has scored both of Santa Clara's two goals this season.

"I am concerned about our lack of depth right now mainly due to injuries," said Murray. "It usually takes about six weeks for a team to really play together as a unit once we get them together. It has been about three weeks right now, so I think in a few more weeks you will see a different team on the field that the one that was out there tonight. We will also get some guys healthy, which definitely will help us with experience and depth."

The Broncos will face Cal Poly in a noon matchup on Sunday in the San Francisco diadora Classic.
