Final Stats

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Junior Anthony Chimienti (San Jose, Calif.) scored a first-half goal that proved to be the game-winner in Santa Clara's 1-0 victory over San Francisco in a West Coast Conference men's soccer match Tuesday at Buck Shaw Stadium.

With the win, Santa Clara improved to 9-7-0 on the season and 3-2-0 in the WCC. The Broncos have won four of their last five matches and have allowed just two goals during that span, including three shutouts. USF fell to 8-9-2 on the season and 2-3-0 in the WCC.

The Broncos clinched their 14th-straight winning season with the win and the 14th-straight season with at least three conference wins. Santa Clara is currently in third-place in the WCC and has not finished lower than third each season since the league began playing men's soccer in 1989.

The match marked the final appearance for USF Head Coach Stephen Negoesco at Buck Shaw Stadium. The winningest coach in NCAA history with 544 wins in 39 seasons, he was honored during a pregame ceremony and presented a gift by Bronco co-captains Jeff Stewart (Bellevue, Wash.) and Joe Ascolese (Chattaroy, Wash.).

The Broncos outshot San Francisco by a 9-6 margin in the game. The two teams battled at the defensive end with USF allowing only the Chimienti goal in the first half and Santa Clara posting its second-straight shutout.. The junior forward took a pass from freshman Kellen Gilmore (San Marcos, Calif.) in the penalty area, made a move past a defender and powered the shot into the far corner for the goal.

Santa Clara returns to Buck Shaw Stadium on Saturday, Nov. 11 for a 7:30 p.m. contest against Loyola Marymount. The match will mark the final home game for Bronco seniors Joe Ascolese, Brett Davis (Ranchos Palos, Verdes, Calif.) and Michael Goehring (Fresno, Calif.).
