Bronco Men Drop Conference Opener

SPOKANE, Wash. - The Santa Clara University men's soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision to Gonzaga in the West Coast Conference men's soccer opener for both teams Friday at Martin Field.

The win was the third in a row for the Bulldogs (6-4-0, 1-0-0) while the Broncos (5-4-0, 0-1-0) suffered their second straight loss and their third in the last four outings.

GU's Zach Scott tallied his second career goal and his first this season when he headed in Scott Yuska's corner, beating Broncos' keeper Rusty Johnson (O'Fallon, Ill.) to the far side at 37:02 to give Gonzaga a 1-0 halftime lead.

The Bulldogs increased the lead in the second half, Kuska scoring his 11th goal of the season at 46:49. Kuska took a through ball from Yuska and beat Johnson, who ranged out of the goal, from the right side.

Ching contributed his fifth goal of the season at 62:34, taking a pass from Kuska and rifling a shot from 18 yards straight on.

Santa Clara returns to the Bay Area to face nationally-ranked San Jose State Sun day night at 7 p.m. in Spartan Stadium.
