Men’s Water Polo Travels East for Princeton Invitational, Faces Rival No. 13 Brown

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – After playing their first game locally last weekend, Santa Clara men's water polo now travels to New Jersey for the Princeton Invitational. The Broncos will play four times, highlighted by a game with No. 13 Brown Sunday morning.

Santa Clara (0-1) dropped a 13-7 decision to No. 14 San Jose State in its 2015 opener. Will Grant had a strong showing against the Spartans with one goal, two steals, and three earned ejections. Captain Evan Chang contributed three earned ejections while Stephen Warnick led the Broncos with two goals.

Princeton Invitational Game Times:

Saturday, Sept. 12 – Iona @ 7:30 a.m., St. Francis @ 6:00 p.m.

Sunday, Sept. 13 – No. 13 Brown @7:00 a.m., Harvard @ 11:00 a.m.

The Broncos were successful against these teams last year, beating Harvard 12-11 and Brown twice, each time with a score of 12-7, but losing a close contest with St. Francis 9-7.

Two of the four teams SCU faces were included in the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) preseason national rankings: St. Francis (No. 17) and Brown (No. 11). Only No. 13 Brown remains in the current top-20 rankings.

With only one game under their belt, the Broncos look to use this trip against solid competition to build some momentum before their California circuit begins. The offense looked balanced against No. 14 San Jose State as six Broncos contributed goals and five Broncos earned 10 ejections in the season debut. Joe Maestri will look to anchor the Santa Clara defense again this weekend after tallying 11 saves in the opener.

This tournament will test the Broncos' abilities as well as their durability and serve as preparation for their upcoming tournaments in California.

The Broncos will renew their perennial rivalry with No. 13 Brown on Sunday morning. With their top-two scorers from 2014 graduated, the Bears will look to Yahel Murvitz-Lahav to build on his 53 goals from last year.  The junior driver from Tel Aviv, Israel already has eight goals on the season, with four of those coming in a 19-6 loss to No. 4 Stanford last weekend.

After returning from the East Coast, the Broncos will host Princeton at Sullivan Aquatic Center. The two teams will see a lot of each other this coming weekend, but will not be in the pool together until Thursday, Sept. 17 at 3 p.m. Santa Clara will then play in the NorCal Tournament in Palo Alto Sept. 19-20.
