Four Broncos Honored by Western Water Polo Association

LOS ANGELES – The Western Water Polo Association honored four players from the Santa Clara men's program leading up to the league championship.

Junior driver Graham McClone was named second-team All-WWPA and driver Owen Asalone was selected to the all-freshman team while senior two-meter performer Evan Chang and sophomore driver John Raineri earned honorable mention all-conference recognition.

McClone ranks first on the team in steals and is third in both goals (37) and kickouts drawn (26).

"Graham's just an all-around good player," head coach Keith Wilbur said. "He scores a lot of different ways whether it's on a counter attack or outside shots."

Raineri also has the scoring touch. He leads the team in goals (42) and is second in steals (41).

"Raineri's had a breakout year shooting the ball," Wilbur said. "He's our lefty who starts. It's important to have a real good lefty and he's broken out in that position this year."

McClone and Raineri have also been durable, starting all 30 games for the Broncos this season.

Chang has started all 28 games he's played and has drawn 61 kickouts, most on the team. A four-year starter, he is the program's all-time leader in earned ejections (184).

"Evan is our senior and he leads our team in earned ejections," Wilbur said. "He does a lot of the hard work in the trenches."

Asalone, a redshirt freshman, is the team's second-leading scorer with 39 goals.

"He's a really good outside shooter," Wilbur said. "We usually put him in the toughest spot to score because that's where teams allow shots to be taken. He's a good player, but a real dynamic shooter."

The Broncos (11-19) will travel to Colorado Springs, Colorado, this weekend for the WWPA Championship at Air Force. Sixth-seeded Santa Clara will play No. 3 seed San Diego Friday at 2:15 p.m. Pacific. The three-day tournament continues until Sunday.
