Men’s Water Polo Hosts No. 11 Princeton for Home Opener Thursday

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara men's water polo returns to Sullivan Aquatic Center for their home opener against No. 11 Princeton Thursday, Sept. 17 at 3:30 p.m. The Broncos are coming home after a 2-2 weekend on the East Coast with a 15-6 win against Iona and an 8-4 win against Saint Francis (N.Y.). The Broncos are 2-3 overall.

The two teams saw a lot of each other over the weekend at the Princeton Invitational, but the last meeting between the two was during the 2013 season where Princeton edged out the Broncos in a 9-7 contest.

No. 11 Princeton marks the third ranked opponent SCU has faced in their first six games.

Owen Asalone had a huge weekend for the Broncos, scoring 10 goals including four against rival No. 13 Brown. He will look to keep his hot streak going against a 4-1 Princeton team. The Bronco offense continues to use a balanced approach, as 12 Broncos contributed goals over the weekend.

Goalies Joe Maestri and Troy Nadel combined for 41 saves while on the East Coast, with Nadel getting his first start of the season Sunday against Harvard. Facing a high-scoring Princeton offense, the two goalies will play an important role in the outcome of the home debut.

Leading Princeton is senior two-meter man Thomas Nelson, who already has 16 goals on the season. Slowing down the center will be a priority for the Bronco defense as they look to start their California campaign on the right foot.

After facing No. 11 Princeton, the Broncos will play in the NorCal Tournament Sept. 19-20 hosted by No. 4 Stanford.
