FRESNO, Calif. - The Santa Clara women's golf team shot a program record 292 (4-over) in the opening round of the Fresno State Lexus Classic Monday, led by Miki Ueoka who is the overnight tournament leader at 3-under par.

Santa Clara out-played 10 other schools in the 14-team field, including No. 36 UC Irvine to tie for third heading into final round play Tuesday at the 6,077-yard, par 72, Copper River Country Club in Fresno.

"The numbers on the board are matching the effort they are putting in," said Santa Clara head coach Polly Schulze. "We have been working as hard on our mental game as we have been working on the range. This is a great confidence booster heading into the rest of our spring tournaments."

Ueoka fired a 3-under 69 in the morning round and turned in an even-par 72 in the afternoon. Ueoka won three tournament titles as a sophomore last season and qualified for the NCAA Tournament.

"I don't want to put any expectations on how we finish, but we are in position to finish right where we came here to be," added Schulze. "It's not going to be easy. I know that the pins will be tough tomorrow, tucked in tougher positions."
