NIPOMO, Calif. - Senior team captain Erin Sullivan shot an even-par 72 for Santa Clara University in the final round of the 2009 Firestone Grill Invitational at the Monarch Dunes Golf Club. Sullivan's Top-10 finish helped the Broncos place fourth at the 10-team event hosted by Cal Poly.
"Erin (Sullivan) is poised to have a great senior year," said Santa Clara head women's golf coach Polly Schulze after the Broncos' season-opening tournament. "I have been so impressed with her hard work. She's a great leader and showed it in that final round."
Sophomore Tammy Surtees and junior Miki Ueoka were among the leaders after two rounds were completed Monday. Ueoka led all 56 players in the field in par 3 scoring, going just 1-over on the par 3s spanning the tournament's three rounds. Kimberly Bedolla ranked second by playing the par 3s at 2-over. The Broncos led all schools by a wide margin in par 3 scoring - posting a tournament-best 3.19 team average.
Lauren Oh carded one of the tournament's two eagles - draining an approach shot on the 523-yard par 5 sixth hole.
"I have no doubt that when we have all five players competing at their best, we'll be able to contend in strong fields," added Schulze. "We've got the toughest, most competitive schedule we've ever had this year and yet I'm confident we'll make Santa Clara proud with our results."
Santa Clara will next compete at the Turtle Bay College Invitational, in Kahuku, Oahu, November, 2-4.
