FRESNO, Calif. - On the heels of a record-setting opening round 292 at Copper River Country Club, the Santa Clara women's golf team posted a top-tier finish, tying for fifth at the Fresno State Lexus Classic this week. The Broncos out-played eight other schools and were even with 36th-ranked UC Irvine.
Overnight leader Miki Ueoka shot a final round 78 and placed sixth on the individual leaderboard with a 3-over par 219 in the 36-hole event. The Broncos posted a team scoring average of 301.
"Overall a great event for us," said Santa Clara head coach Polly Schulze. "We wanted to get a top five finish - very respectable in this field. This team is making a lot of progress. We are moving in the right direction and building confidence. We hope to do just as well next week in San Jose."
Not only did Ueoka place sixth, but Erin Sullivan and Tammy Surtees both finished in the top 25. Sullivan shot an even-par 72 Monday and tied for 18th. Surtees finished strong with a 2-over 74 to come in tied for 23rd.
The Broncos are back on the course next week at San Jose Country Club competing at the Juli Inkster Spartan Invitational, Monday and Tuesday, March 8-9.
