March 18, 2001

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Santa Clara women's water polo placed fourth at the Claremont Tournament this afternoon, despite two losses to close tournament play. The Broncos fall to 5-15 on the season after losing to host Claremont 5-4 and Occidental 10-8 in the third-place game.

The Broncos opened the tournament yesterday afternoon with two victories, including an upset win over Division III's top-ranked squad Redlands, by an 11-10 score. A 10-9 win over Bucknell to open the tournament eventually advanced SCU into the semifinals this morning.

The Broncos led Claremont 4-2 entering the fourth quarter, but allowed the host team three goals, including the game winner, for the loss. Senior Kim Yost registered two goals, while sophomore Becky Hong and senior Liz Schuricht posted one score each for SCU. Senior Sarah Peterson registered five saves in goal.

In the late match, sophomore Kelley Mays led all scorers with three goals while Hong and Schuricht added two each. Sophomore Carly Carpenter provided the final tally. Peterson added four blocks.

The Broncos now return home for a four-match homestand to close regular-season action at the Santa Clara Pool. On March 24, SCU hosts Chico State at 9 a.m. followed by a noon meeting with Cal Poly.
