Women's Water Polo Captures Fifth Place in Division III National Championships

May 8, 2000

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - The Santa Clara University women's water polo team received three goals each from Becky Hong and Kelley Mays to defeat MIT 12-6 and capture fifth place in the Division III National Championships. In only its second season as a varsity sport, Santa Clara improves from an unranked campaign in 1999 to the No. 5 national ranking in 2000. The Broncos won seven of their last nine matches to finish at 18-23 overall.

The three-day, eight-team Division III National Championships were held at UC Santa Cruz. Occidental captured the championship with a 7-6, overtime victory over Claremont. Redlands, the five-time defending champion, finished third, followed by UC Santa Cruz, Santa Clara, MIT, Washington & Jefferson and Macalester.

In Sunday's fifth-place match, Santa Clara took a 4-2 lead after one quarter and never looked back en route to a 12-6 victory over MIT. The Broncos led 7-4 at halftime and 9-5 after three quarters. In addition to the hat tricks by Hong and Mays, Lara Williams had two goals while Sara Schmitt, Kristy Kunisaki, Kim Yost and Liz Schurict all added one apiece. With the victory, Santa Clara finished the tournament with three consecutive wins.

Junior Kim Yost, who had 12 goals in the five matches, earned first team All-Tournament honors. Freshman Becky Hong was given Honorable Mention accolades following her six-goal performance.
