SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Senior Kim Yost's left-handed goal with less than two minutes remaining secured Santa Clara's third victory of the day, an 8-7 win over LaVerne at the Pioneer Tournament. The Broncos opened the water polo invitational with two wins this morning, 9-8 over CS San Bernadino and 16-6 over Chico State. Hosted by CS Hayward, today's action took place at the Leavey Pool.
The Broncos, now 10-17 on the year, will face Cal Poly at 9:15 tomorrow morning at Leavey. A win would place SCU in the championship match, a 2 p.m. contest to be played at CS Hayward's pool. The consolation match is scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m., also in Hayward.
The Broncos opened the third game with an offense burst. Yost scored two goals in each of the first two quarters en route to a 7-2 halftime lead. Sophomore Carly Carpenter added two scores while fellow sophomore Kelley Mays added one goal to account for the first-half edge.
LaVerne shut out the Broncos in the third quarter while scoring two goals themselves to reduce the deficit to 7-4. Goals by Leopards' Jennifer Pacheco and Andrea Griffith in the first two minutes of the fourth period pulled the visitors to within one. Yost, a right-hander, scored with her non-dominant hand at the 1:43 mark to give the Broncos a two-point cushion. But with 38 seconds left, Griffith added another LaVerne score.
The Broncos held on to the ball the rest of the match, but officials called both teams back to the pool for three more seconds of action, with the possession arrow favoring LaVerne. A last-second shot by Pacheco skimmed over the crossbar to preserve the Bronco victory.
In the opener, Santa Clara was led again by Yost, who posted her second straight four-goal performance after notching a quartet of scores yesterday against Loyola Marymount. Sophomores Becky Hong and Kelley Mays added two goals each for the Broncos, while senior Liz Schuricht's goal made the final margin.
In the second contest, Hong led all scorers with three goals as the Broncos' offense was even at four goals each quarter. Yost, Schuricht, Mays and freshmen Kelly Morrison and Anne Ginotti added two goals each, while sophomores Elizabeth Glotzbach, Carpenter and Ashley Albers registered one score each.
