Women's Water Polo Prepares for League Tournament

April 25, 2001

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The Santa Clara women's water polo team opens the Women's Western Water Polo Association Tournament against host UC San Diego on Friday at 3:30 p.m. in the Canyonview Pool.

Santa Clara hopes to continue their winning ways as the Broncos are entering this tournament winning four of their last five games in the Pioneer Tournament hosted by CS Hayward. The Broncos finished second in that tournament. Santa Clara's overall record on the season is now 11-18.

Santa Clara has not faced UC San Diego yet this season. They did defeat UC Santa Cruz and CS Bernardino in the regular season, however their overall record against participating teams during the regular season is 2-8.

The Broncos will look to senior Kim Yost, a 2000 Division III All-American and Santa Clara's leading scorer, to lead the team to the championships. Yost was the top goal-scorer in 12 matches this year.

Santa Clara also has a trio of sophomore scorers to reek havoc on opposing defenses. Elizabeth Glotzbach, Becky Hong, and Kelley Mays all had around 30 goals. Hong was the Broncos top goal-scorer in nine matches this year.

Other than the second-place finish in the Pioneer tournament, the Broncos finished fourth in the Claremont Tournament. In that event, Santa Clara upset Redlands, the top-ranked team in Division III, by a score of 11-10. During the regular season, the Broncos also played Hawaii, the sixth ranked team in the country, and swept instate rival Chico State.

The event runs through Sunday and the winner will receive an automatic bid to the 2001 NCAA Championships, hosted by Stanford University on May 12-13. The second through fourth-place finishers will be invited to participate in the North Coast Section Tournament.
