Outdoor Track Programs Compete Well at the Bay Area Blast-Off

March 19, 2005

BERKELEY, Calif. - Under a combination of threatening and sunny skies the Santa Clara outdoor tack teams competed at historic Edwards Track Stadium in Berkeley, Calif.today. Windy conditions on the home stretch proved quite challenging for most runners during the afternoon. Santa Clara was up to the task posting several season bests.

Leading the Broncos on the women's side was sophomore Jessica Baldwin-Philippi who anchored the distance medley relay against the wind in time of 5:25.6.

Fellow sophomore Blossom Marimpietri made her 2005 comeback in the 3000-meters running a solid time of 11:01.

The women's 4 x 400 relay team, which consisted of Caitlin O'Keefe, Jeanette Cote, Ann Thomas, and Carrie Pogorelc also posted a season best. Following a tough week of finals and with spring break looming the Santa Clara women showed positive signs of returning the Bronco distance program to the top of the West Coast Conference.

The men competed in several races as the day's events were mostly relay races. The lone individual event for the Broncos was the 3000-meters where the men proved that their early season hard work has paid off. Leading the 3k with excellent early season times were Michael Delaurenti and Chris Doerhoff running times of 8:51 and 8:57, respectively. Christen Gumbs and Andrew Blumel also ran excellent races.

The Broncos have a bye next week and return to action on April 2 at the Johnny Mathis Invitational in San Francisco, Calif.
