Bell Wins 5,000-Meters at Chico State Twilight Open

CHICO, Calif. - Sophomore Shannon Bell won the 5,000-meters at the Chico State Twilight Open on Saturday night in Chico, Calif. to claim the first individual title for the Bronco women this season. Bell bested her closest competitor by over 23 seconds in the last event of the meet.

Along with Bell's win in the 5,000-meters, Katie Hansen highlighted the Broncos with a second place finish in the 3,000-meter run. Four other Broncos finished in the top-10 of the event as Robin Bell placed sixth in a time of 11:10.59.

A pair of Bronco women had top-10 showings in the 1,500-meters. Kiley Strong placed ninth in a time of 5:04.81, while Ann Thomas placed 10th in a time of 5:06.11.

In the shorter distances, the Bronco women fared just as well as three SCU runners placed in the top-10 of the 400-meter dash. Carrie Pogorelc led the way with a sixth-place finish. Julie Erickson represented SCU in the 200-meter dash, placing 15th in a time of 28.87.

On the men's side, Chris Doerhoff placed fourth to highlight a strong showing in the 5,000-meters for SCU. He crossed the line at 15:31.37, while Michael Delaurenti placed eighth in a time of 15:42.39.

John Paul Thyken also earned a top-10 finish for SCU as he placed tenth in the 1,500-meters in a time of 4:05.34.

Daniel Bettencourt and Taylor Graham represented the Broncos in the 800-meters as they placed 14th and 15th, respectively.

Both Bronco squads will wrap-up their first ever regular season next Saturday at the USF Distance Carnival in San Francisco.
