SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara University head coach Tom Service announced the 2005 outdoor track schedule today. SCU will sponsor outdoor track in 2005 as was announced by Director of Athletics and Recreaction Dan Coonan earlier this week.
"Myself, the coaches and the student-athletes are all very excited and looking forward to the inaugural NCAA track season at Santa Clara," said head coach Tom Service. "Even though we are only adding one more meet this year, it is a very exciting step for our program."
The Broncos will start their season in Northern California when they travel to Davis, Calif. for the Aggie Opener on March 12.
"The Aggie Opener will be a great event to start off our season," commented Service. "There will be a good mix of local talent and strong club teams at the meet."
On the following weekend, the Broncos will head south for the Cal Poly Invitational in San Luis Obispo, Calif. on March 19.
"The competition level will be raised at Cal Poly," stated Service. "With many Big West teams competing, it will be a strong field."
SCU will take a week off from competition before returning to action on April 2. The Broncos will return to the Johnny Mathis Invitational, hosted by San Francisco State, after competing at the same meet in 2004.
Another bye week will follow the trip to San Francisco before SCU comes back to competition on April 16. Depending on the team's early results, the Broncos may head to Berkeley for the Golden Bear Invitational or south to the Long Beach Invitational.
The Broncos will also compete the following week, but they have not yet determined where. SCU may travel to Chico for the Chico Twilight Invitational or to Sacramento for the Bruce Drummond Invitational.
To conclude the regular season slate, Santa Clara will once again travel to San Francisco for the USF Distance Carnival on April 29. Taking place at Kezar Stadium, the former home of the San Francisco 49ers, the Broncos will be able to participate in a variety of distance events, including the 4x800-meter relay and the distance medley relay.
"The USF Distance Carnival is going to be a great way to end our regular season," said Service. "There will be so many events to take part in. We will be able to give some athletes their first chance to run the 10,000 meters on the track in San Francisco.
The NCAA Regional Championships will be held in Eugene, Ore on May 27-28. The NCAA Championship meet will take place in Northern California as Sacramento will host the meet for the second straight year on June 8-12.
