Student-Athletes Post Highest Single Quarter GPA in School History; Women's Cross Country Leads All with 3.557!

Recording the highest grade point average in Santa Clara history, Bronco student-athletes recorded a school record 3.1397 gpa for the spring 2011 quarter.  The previous high-water mark for the student-athletes one quarter gpa was 3.11 in the winter of 2009. In addition 94 student-athletes achieved a 3.5 GPA this quarter. Santa Clara's student-athletes have achieved a 3.0 GPA or better 13 of the last 14 quarters.  Santa Clara's cumulative gpa for its student-athletes is 3.0987.  

"This is a terrific accomplishment," said Bronco Athletic Director Dan Coonan.  "Congratulations are certainly in order not only for each of our student-athletes, but for their coaches for creating a culture conducive to academic success, and to Zoe Segnitz and Jason Stock of our Academic Services unit, whose diligent efforts set the tone for this success.  Our student-athletes are clearly embracing their academic challenges with the same intensity with which they engage their opponents."

The women's cross country team led all Bronco teams for the third straight quarter with a 3.557 gpa during the spring 2011 quarter.  They also have the top cumulative gpa at 3.388 as well. It was the highest GPA on record for a single team in a single quarter as well.

On the men's side, the cross country team also posted the highest GPA at 3.367 for the spring 2011 quarter for the third straight quarter. They also had the highest cumulative GPA at 3.304.

""The women's and men's teams work very hard on the trails and in the class room. We are all very pleased with their latest academic accomplishments. I look forward to seeing how we do again next quarter," said Bronco head cross country and track coach Felipe Montoro.

Individually, Santa Clara had 18 student-athletes achieve a perfect 4.0 gpa for the spring 2011 quarter and 41 student-athletes posted a 3.8 GPA or higher.

Fourteen Bronco programs posted a 3.0 GPA or better for the spring 2011 quarter, with 10 teams posting a 3.2 gpa or better for the spring 2011 quarter and six teams posting a 3.3 gpa or better. In addition, 14 teams have a 3.0 gpa or better for their cumulative GPA - with all but one women's sport posting a cumulative gpa of 3.0 or better. 

There are 73 Bronco student-athletes with a 3.5 or higher cumulative grade point average as well.

Those 14 teams who posted a 3.0 or better GPA for the spring 2011 quarter include: men's cross country, men's crew, men's tennis, men's outdoor track, women's basketball, women's cross country, women's crew, women's golf, softball, women's soccer, women's tennis, women's outdoor track, women's water polo and volleyball.

This spring four student-athletes were named to Capital One CoSIDA Academic All-District teams with Stephanie Wilson being honored on the Capital One Academic All-American Second Team for cross country/track. Those honored on the all-district team include Wilson, men's water polo's Stephen Hobbs, cross country's Kevin Oliver and baseball's Curtis Wagner.  Wilson and Oliver were the only runners honored academically by CoSIDA in the West Coast Conference and Wagner was one of just two from the league.
