The Santa Clara men's and women's cross country Teams both raced at the Hornet Jamboree hosted by Sac State Saturday morning with the men finishing fourth and the women finishing sixth.

The women's team was once again led by freshman Mary Kriege, who set a personal best of 18:36 for the 5k course in 19th place. Cal All-American Deborah Maier won the race by 30 seconds setting a course record in 16:31.

As a team, the Broncos finished sixth. Junior Hayley Ney made her season debut and finished second for Santa Clara in 18:51. She was closely followed by fellow junior Mary Reynolds who was also competing for the first time this season. Reynolds ran the course in 19:06. The remainder of the top 7 were: freshman Kelly Ryan, 19:24; sophomore Jamie Anderson, 19:29; freshman Audrey Hiatt, 19:31 and senior Nicole Giove, 19:33.

"I thought we did a decent job of executing the race plan. I would have liked to have seen the pack stick together a little longer. However, we made significant progress over last week's performance and we have a lot to build on heading into Stanford in a few weeks," said Bronco head coach Felipe Montoro.

 

The men's team placed fourth and were a mere six points from finishing as the runner-up behind Minnesota, who entered the season ranked 27th in the country. Minnesota dominated the men's race scoring a perfect 15 points.

The Bronco men were led by senior Robbie Reid, who completed the 4 mile course in 19:43, good for ninth place overall. Sophomore Ben Demaree was right on Reid's heel's finishing 11th overall and running 19:45. Fellow sophomore Luca Signore also had a solid performance to open his season, finishing in 17th place and running 19:58. The remainder of the top 7 were: junior Marcos Hinojosa, 20:37; senior Chris Sampson, 20:52; freshman Peter Stephens, 20:53, and freshman Sean Roe, 20:53.

"The men ran very well today. Our top runners ran together most of the race and looked like they were in control and have more in the tank. The second pack did an outstanding job of sticking together. However, we have some work to do before we are ready to compete at the level we believe we are capable of in the post season," said Montoro. "I am really looking forward to watching both teams compete at the Stanford Invite in a few weeks".

 

The men and women will head to the beach in Capitola on Monday for their annual training camp at New Brighton State Beach.
