Bronco Baseball Drops Game One To CSU Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Unable to overcome an early deficit, Santa Clara baseball fell to CSU Bakersfield by a final of 9-5. The loss drops the Broncos to 17-11 while the win pushes Bakersfield to 14-15.

LHP Powell Fansler (5-2; 3.54) made the start and got hit around in 1.2 innings. He allowed six hits five runs, four earned with one strikeout and one walk while picking up the loss. RF Greg Harisis continued to hit well for Santa Clara by going 2-3 with a RBI and two walks.

The two teams will play again today as they wrap-up a three game series.

The Roadrunners struck in the bottom of the first when they put together a two out rally. 2B Oscar Sanay reached on a fielding error by 3B Matt Glomb and C Frank Martinez followed with a double to left center to make the score 1-0. A single by 1B Cael Brockmeyer put runners on the corners but Fansler got 3B D.C. Legg to strike out swinging and end the inning.

Bakersfield stretched its lead to five in the bottom of the second. LF Dylan Christensen led off with a double to left field and moved to third on a fly out by DH Mick Gaston to right center. RF Garrett Pierce walked on a full count and CF Andrew Letourneau laid down a sacrifice bunt that scored the second run of the inning. SS Tyler Shryock singled up the middle to knock in another run. After Sanay singled through the right side Martinez doubled to left center for two RBI. RHP James Smith came in for Fansler and got out of the inning with the score 5-0.

Another four spot in the bottom of the third opened up the game for Bakersfield. Christensen led off with a walk and Gaston followed with a walk of his own. Pierce singled through the left side to load the bases. Letourneau was hit by a pitch to bring in a run and Smith was lifted for RHP Chris Mendoza. The Broncos got an out at home on a fielder's choice but Sanay knocked in two runs with a single to left. After Martinez struck out swinging Brockmeyer singled through the left side to extend the lead to 9-0. Legg flied out to center to finally end the inning.

Santa Clara made a dent in the scoreboard in the top of the fifth. 2B Evan Peters hit a one out infield single. After a strike out to Glomb, SS Justin Viele reached on a fielding error by the second baseman. CF Matt Ozanne hit a ball to second that was booted to allow the first run to score. Harisis singled through the right side for a RBI but 1B Andrew Biancardi hit into a fielder's choice to end the inning.

After two quick outs, pinch hitter Quinton Perry smacked a home run to left center to make the score 9-3. Peters reached on an error by the shortstop and pinch hitter Kyle DeMerritt walked but Viele hit into a fielder's choice to end the inning.

Santa Clara made a game of it in the top of the seventh. M. Ozanne led off with a triple to left field. Harisis walked and Biancardi singled through the left side to bring in a run. LF Pat Stover hit an infield single to shortstop to load the bases. After DH Drew Ozanne struck out, Perry hit a sac fly to center to make the score 9-5. Peters struck out swinging to end the inning.

Santa Clara went down in order in the ninth to end the game and give Bakersfield the win.
