SANTA CLARA, Calif. – With the release of the NCAA Academic Progress Rate data, Santa Clara men's basketball achieved a single-year perfect score of 1,000 to raise it's a multi-year score to 985 for the 2013-14 season marking the fourth straight annual increase in their score. The average across the NCAA for men's basketball was 961. The Broncos score put them in the top-50 nationally and at the top of the West Coast Conference.
"Men's basketball continues to perform well on its Academic Progress Rate report card," said Interim Director of Athletics Jeff Mitchell. "As a department, we are fortunate to have a strong scholastic culture, and I am appreciative of the emphasis that our coaches, support staff, and student-athletes place on academic success."
"We are proud to have maintained our academic strength within our basketball program here at Santa Clara," said Santa Clara head coach Kerry Keating. "The demands here are high and our internal accountability is even higher, the results of which are a testament to our student-athletes, professors, and the academic support staff. The WCC boasts strong academic institutions across the board and we are proud to once again be atop the men's basketball rankings of the four-year APR scores.
"We owe special thanks to former academic coordinators Jason Stock and Angela Munger, and our current coordinator Dana McCusker, for all that they do to ensure our players forward progress and success in the classroom."
The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.
Similar to a report card, every Division I sports team calculates its APR each academic year. Scholarship student-athletes each semester earn one point for remaining eligible and one point for staying in school or graduating.
