SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Santa Clara University men's crew squad concluded one of its most successful years in recent history with strong showings in both the Pacific Coast Rowing Championships and the Pac-10 Championships. Both events contained Universities across the West Coast and were held at Lake Natoma outside Sacramento, Calif.
The Varsity Four, competing as an invite boat in the Pac-10 Championships on Sunday, May 14, placed second in its heat and third in the grand final. In the process, Santa Clara defeated all of the crews that finished ahead of them at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association championships in April. The Broncos covered the course in 7:04.8 in the final, behind champion Washington and runner-up California but ahead of San Diego State, Oregon State and UC Santa Barbara.
On Saturday, May 13, the Novice Four had an heroic effort to place fourth, just out of medal contention, in the final. After easily winning their heat with a time identical to that of eventual champion UCLA, the Broncos suffered a broken fin just prior to the championship round. Nonetheless, Santa Clara finished with a 7:25.2, a mere three seconds behind the third place time.
