SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Santa Clara University men's crew team, led by its championship Novice 4 boat, had a strong showing in the recent Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championships. The event, held at Lake Natoma just outside Sacramento, Calif., featured a total of 16 boats from schools across the West Coast.
After cruising to a five-second victory over San Diego State in the qualifying heat, Santa Clara's Novice 4 boat pulled away during the last 500 meters to finish six seconds ahead of second place Seattle Pacific and capture the championship. The win marked the Broncos' first WIRA title since 1991, when both the Varsity 4 and the Novice 4 brought home gold. The championship Bronco four were composed of a quartet of freshmen: coxswain Elisabeth Fleming, stroke Matt Riley, No. 3 rower Wiley Erikson, Jeremy Schrader in the No. 2 spot and bow Del France.
Santa Clara's Varsity 4 also had a solid showing, easily qualifying for the final race. In the championship, the Broncos' spirited push for a bronze medal during the sprint fell just short as Santa Clara missed third by .6 seconds.
The final Bronco boat, the Novice 8, showed the vast improvement it made over the course of the season. Although it failed to finish third and thus qualify for the final, Santa Clara was only 3.4 seconds behind UC Santa Barbara, who had posted an 18-second victory earlier this season.
