SCU Men's Golf Signs San Ramon Standout

April 17, 2003

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University men's golf team announced the signing of 5-9 right-hander Jong Yoon to a national letter of intent, head coach John Kennaday announced during the late signing period that began yesterday.

Yoon will join the Bronco program next fall and as the Broncos are not losing a player from this season's roster, is the only signee.

"We are all very excited about Jong joining the program," Kennaday said. "He is a very organized and committed young man who I believe will not only benefit from our commitment level but add to it as well."

A native of San Ramon, Yoon is one of the top junior golfers in California and is currently attending the David Leadbetter Academy in Bradenton, Fla. He recently placed second at an International Junior Golf Tournament event.

As a freshman and sophomore, Yoon attended California High School and earned first-team All-East Bay Athletic League honors during both seasons. He was the medalist at the 1999 EBAL Championship and was voted by his school as the best student-athlete the following year.

In tournaments, Yoon earned medalist honors at the Junior Tour event at Woodlands, and tied for medalist honors at the AJGA Compaq Jr. All-Star tournament. Additionally, he placed third at the PGA Jr. Tournament in Redmond, Ore., and tied for 15th at the AJGA Legendary Headwear Invitational. Yoon is a three-time winner of the Pasatiempo Junior Invitational.

"Jong is tournament-tough," Kennaday added. "He's played in several national events and loves the competition. He has very strong fundamentals in all aspects of the game and will make an impact on our program right away."
