Men's Golf Leads After Day One of SCU Invitational

SAN JOSE, Calif. - The Santa Clara University men's golf team leads its own tournament by seven strokes after the first two rounds Monday at the Silver Creek Valley Country Club in San Jose, Calif.

The Broncos fired an opening round 300 and were just one stroke behind Cal Poly after the morning session but came back with a 298 in the second round to open up a seven shot lead over Saint Mary's who fired rounds of 307 and 298. San Francisco is currently in third place following their team rounds of 304 and 302. Cal Poly slipped to fourth after a second round 309.

Santa Clara junior Justin Ahasic leads the individual scoring after shooting rounds of 73 and 71 to finish day one at even-par. Sophomore Matt Klenz is in third place for the Broncos with his two-round total of 3-over par, 147. Robert Frye of San Francisco and Joe Lanza of Saint Mary's are in second place at 2-over par, 146.

Vincent Aicale shots rounds of 76 and 77 to finish day one in a tie for 18th, while Michael Nicoletti is in 22nd place for Santa Clara after finishing the first two rounds with a score of 10-over par, 154. Jonathan Edwards rounded out the Bronco scoring with a two-round total of 15-over par, 159.

The tee times for day two shifted somewhat following the second round as the number one golfers from Gonzaga, Loyola Marymount and Hawaii-Hilo were each disqualified from both rounds after playing from the wrong tee boxes.

Tee times will begin at 7 a.m. Tuesday morning and will run through the final pairing of Justin Ahasic, Joe Lanza and Roberty Frye who tee off at 9:24 a.m. on the 6,868-yard, par-72 course located in South San Jose.
