SANTA CLARA, Calif. - SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Bruin senior Shaun Tsakiris scored on a penalty kick at the 100:26 mark of overtime to lead No. 1 ranked UCLA to a dramatic 1-0 win over Santa Clara in from of 1,448 fans at Buck Shaw Stadium.

The two teams battled to a scoreless tie to end the 90:00 regulation highlighted by back-to-back point-blank saves in the final 10:00 by Bronco junior goalkeeper Rusty Johnson (O'Fallon, Ill.). Johnson recorded six saves in the match, including three in the final minutes of regulation.

With the loss, Santa Clara falls to 5-3 on the season. UCLA goes to 7-0.

In overtime, Tsakiris drew a foul in UCLA's offensive goal area and was awarded a penalty kick with the clock reading 4:34 left in the overtime period. His shot advanced just past an outstretched Johnson into the upper right corner of the goal to give UCLA the victory.

"UCLA has incredible talent and they are a great team," said Mitch Murray. "It was a challenge for our guys to step-up and see where we were as a team. It was a hard-fought game. We had some good chances and that is what you look for. These are really the games you grow from. It obviously hurts to lose this game, especially on a penalty kick. But, it would not have come to that if we had put away one of our chances.

"In the final third, we did some good things but we still need to be a little sharper. We really had them on their heels a couple of times but we were a little slow to get off a shot or slip that final pass. If we can get a little sharper and play a little quicker while maintaining our composure, I think we are capable of beating anyone in the country on any given day.

"I want to complement our support from the student body and the fans the last few games. The crowd really made a different for us in the Cal game and they were great tonight. We need that if we have any chance to win the conference. They have been super."

In its next match, Santa Clara open conference play Friday, Oct. 6 at Gonzaga.
