Santa Clara Drops Men's Soccer Contest at No. 7 San Jose State

Oct. 8, 2000

SAN JOSE, Calif. - After three-straight wins over its cross-town rivals, the Santa Clara men's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision at seventh-ranked San Jose State Sunday night at Spartan Stadium.

The loss snapped a three-match winning streak over the Spartans by Santa Clara, dating back to 1996. The loss dropped Santa Clara to 5-5-0 on the season, while San Jose State improved to 10-0-1.

Ryan Suarez of San Jose State scored the first Spartan's goal at the game's 53:01 mark. His first shot attempt rebounded off the glove of Santa Clara junior goalkeeper Rusty Johnson (O'Fallon, Ill.). Suarez took the rebound and launched a shot into the middle of the Santa Clara goal for the score.

At the 57:43 mark in the game, Bronco junior Anthony Chimienti (San Jose, Calif.) narrowly missed tying the contest with a breakaway shot that was knocked wide of the goal by Spartan goalkeeper Chris Humphreys. The San Jose State senior also stopped a point-blank blast by SCU sophomore Stephen Biondolillo (Monte Sereno, Calif.) at the 75:19 mark in the game to stop another Bronco scoring threat.

Spartan Isaias Bardales knocked-in a rebound off a teammate's back at the 79:02 mark to give San Jose State a 2-0 lead.

The two teams battled to a scoreless tie in a fast-paced first half that saw just seven total shots on goal, six by San Jose State. Johnson prevented several Spartan attempts with key plays throughout the half. The Spartans outshot Santa Clara by a 17-5 margin in the match.

Santa Clara's next scheduled match is Thursday, Oct. 12 at 5th-ranked Stanford. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Stanford's Maloney Field. The Stanford / Santa Clara series is tied at 16-16-5 all-time with four of the last seven meetings being decided in overtime.
