Men's Soccer Plays to 0-0 Tie with No. 21 California

Sept. 14, 2003

Box Score

BERKELEY, Calif. - The sixth-ranked Santa Clara University men's soccer team remained unbeaten on the 2003 season with a 0-0 tie at No. 21 California on Sunday in the final game of the USF/Diadora Classic. The Broncos move to 4-0-2 on the year while the Golden Bears' see their record change to 2-3-1.

"I am not disappointed with the outcome today, but at the same time I am not satisfied with it," said head coach Cameron Rast. "Games like this are ones that seemed to slip away from us in past years, so it is good that we did not lose, but we had our opportunities to win and just couldn't capitalize on them. That is where we need to improve."

SCU took 18 shots in the game compared to only five for Cal. Junior Will Weatherly took seven shots by himself for the Broncos followed by Jeff Scott, Kelechi Igwe and Matt Upton who each had a pair of shots.

The Bronco defense was stellar as usual; anchored by juniors Ryan Cochrane and Jason Pan as the two dominated play in the SCU half of the field, often times winning balls in the air. Goalkeeper Steve Cronin posted his fourth shutout of the season and improved to 4-0-1 in games he has appeared in.

Santa Clara has allowed only one goal during the 2003 season, that coming in the Broncos' 3-1 win over then No. 4 SMU in the LMU Fall Classic last weekend.

Five different players accounted for the Golden Bears' shots in the game while netminder Mike Oseguera picked up the shutout while making seven saves.

SCU returns to action next weekend with a pair of home games in the Santa Clara adidas Classic. The Broncos will take on Cal State Monterey Bay on Thursday evening before facing George Washington Saturday night. Both matches are scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
