KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Freshman Kyle Perkins' goal in the 84th minute broke a 1-1 tie and gave UMKC a 2-1 victory over No. 5 Santa Clara at Swope Park Soccer Complex in Kansas City, Mo., on Sunday afternoon.
The Kangaroos (2-5-1) had several chances in the match's prior 10 minutes before senior Brandon Watermann crossed a ball to the near side of the pitch to senior Dan Hilson, who found Perkins alone in front of the goal. Perkins then tapped the ball past Santa Clara goalkeeper Steve Cronin at 83:09. It was Perkins's first goal of the season.
Perkins had just narrowly missed on a chance in the 80th minute as his right-footed shot slid past the far post.
Santa Clara (7-2-2) also had several chances to score in the period, the best of which came in the 63rd minute as Ryan Wolfe fired a curling shot that UMKC sophomore goalkeeper Todd Dohlman just got a hand on to make one of his five saves.
UMKC opened the scoring just 2:32 into the contest as freshman Ryan Kaufman scored to the far post from just inside the penalty area, taking a pass from senior Drew Perkins and blasting a shot past Cronin.
The Broncos got the equalizer at 29:48 on a Keith DeVey tap-in after an initial shot by Jeff Scott was saved by Dohlman. The ball rolled to DeVey and he found the back of the net for his third goal of the season.
SCU kept up the pressure, as Scott hit the woodwork in the 31st minute and re-directed a header past the near post in the 40th minute. The final opportunity of the half came in the 45th minute as Will Weatherly fired a shot from 13 yards out that Dohlman had to tip over the crossbar.
Santa Clara outshot UMKC, 14-3, and held a 6-4 edge in corner kicks. Dohlman earned his second victory of the season, while Cronin made one save in taking his second loss of the campaign.
The Broncos return to action next week with their final two non-conference matches of the season, taking on Stanford Thursday night before welcoming in Sacramento State on Sunday evening. Both matches are slated for 7 p.m. starts.
