SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara men's soccer announced the fifth member of its incoming recruiting class for the 2017-18 school year on Wednesday, Terrell Smith. The left back currently attends Burnaby Central Secondary School and hails from Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada.
"At SCU, I'll have access to plenty of resources that I can use to become a better footballer, a better student, and ultimately a better person," Smith said. "The university has an incredible soccer facility, a great academic reputation and it's in the Bay Area, which has so much to offer. Santa Clara's also fairly close to my hometown, so seeing my family and friends often won't be too challenging."
A 5-11 left-footed left back, Smith has played for the Vancouver Whitecaps FC academy for the last five years as part of the residency program. During the 2016-17 season playing for the U18 residency team, Smith and his squad are currently first in the northwest division and 11th overall in the USSDA standings with nine games remaining. He has played in 17 games on the year with 15 starts while contributing one goal and five assists.
"We're very excited about signing Terrell," head coach Cameron Rast said. "Terrell will be a great addition to our team and fills a real need for us. We have every expectation that his development will continue here at Santa Clara. We have every expectation that his development will continue at Santa Clara."
Smith and his squad finished in first place in the northwest division and took third place overall in the USSDA standings in 2015-16 for the U16 team. He started in 21 of the 25 games he played and scored two goals. Smith also played for the U15 (2013 and 2014) and U16 (2015) Canadian National Teams.
"He has done very well in his youth career," Rast said. "I think his personality will be a great addition to our group as he has a very serious and professional-minded approach to the game. That is going to fit in very well with our goals and aspirations for the team."
Smith is a dual citizen of Canada and the Unites States. He learned to read, write and speak French at a French immersion school in grades one through seven. He is also currently studying Spanish. He enjoys reading, listening to and playing music and spending time with friends and family during his spare time.
"When you look at his overall make up, he is a left-footed, left back that's athletic, comes from a great background and has a great demeanor and personality," Rast said. "You can only be excited about that as a coach."
Smith will pursue a degree in sociology at Santa Clara and aspires to follow in his father's footsteps and become a law enforcement officer after his soccer career concludes.
