SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Playing against the No. 29 ranked team in the country, the Santa Clara men's tennis team dropped its match 4-0 to the University of Tulsa on Friday afternoon.

The Broncos forced the doubles into a deciding third match but were unable to keep pace with the Golden Hurricanes, falling in three consecutive singles matches to put Santa Clara at 4-3 on the season and 0-3 on the road.

"Credit to Tulsa for coming out and playing high caliber tennis today," said Head Coach Derek Mills. "It was a tough match against a highly ranked team but our guys will learn from these experiences."

For the first time this season, Santa Clara reshuffled its doubles lineup at all three positions. Serving up the match, the Broncos found themselves in an early hole after the No. 1 tandem of Ashot Khacharyan and Jeffrey Liang was downed by a score of 6-1. Picking up the slack, Connor Garnett and Kamran Khan opened up a 5-1 lead on their opponents and traded the final two points to grab the victory. With the doubles point decision coming down to Court 2, Andrew Gu and Robert Seby split the first six points with their Golden Hurricane opponents. Unable to maintain rhythm, Santa Clara dropped the next three points, giving Tulsa the 1-0 advantage.

Tulsa increased its lead with a straight-set victory on Court 3 in singles. Looking for his second consecutive victory and fifth of the dual season, Gu was upended 6-3, 6-4.

The Golden Hurricanes pressed forward and distanced themselves after Okkie Kellerman overcame Khan in a back-and-forth match, 6-4, 7-5.

Needing one more victory to clinch the victory, Dylan McCloskey closed the door on a Bronco comeback attempt. Despite taking the first set 6-3, Seby was unable to keep the momentum rolling, falling 6-1, 6-1 in sets two and three.

With the match in the books, Santa Clara and Tulsa left three matches unfinished. On Court 1, Khacharyan dropped the first set 7-6 competing against Carlos Bautista but was in control in the second frame, leading 4-1. Playing at his customary No. 4 position, Garnett came away with a first set victory, dropped the second set and found himself down 3-1 in set number three. Playing No. 6 singles, Sebastien Mathieu was outmatched in his first set but was leading 6-5 in set number two when the match was called.

The Broncos will look to dethrone another ranked foe this Sunday when they travel to face the University of Arkansas.
